Ten Years After Britain Bans Guns, Gun Crime Is 4x Larger

January 5, 2008

From wikipedia:

The Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 was the first significant piece of legislation introduced by the new Labour government of Tony Blair. …. this new (No. 2) act banned the private ownership of all cartridge ammunition handguns, regardless of calibre.

And now from Times Online which is Britain’s premier newspaper:

THE government was accused yesterday of covering up the full extent of the gun crime epidemic sweeping Britain, after official figures showed that gun-related killings and injuries had risen more than fourfold since 1998.

The Home Office figures – which exclude crimes involving air weapons – show the number of deaths and injuries caused by gun attacks in England and Wales soared from 864 in 1998-99 to 3,821 in 2005-06.

Quote from Home Office:

The number of firearm crimes which resulted in injuries has more than doubled in seven years
years: from 2,378 in 1998/99 to 5,001 in 2005/06. This entire rise comes from non-air weapon
offences resulting in injuries which have risen more than four-fold in that time.

Terminal Ballistics & Self Defense

August 4, 2007

Ballistics Chart
Stopping Power
As you can see from the above picture .45 ACP, .357 Sig, and .40 S&W all have about the same terminal ballistics or stopping power at short range. The .357 Sig and 10mm have much better ballistics at longer ranges due to their higher velocity.

Nothing can beat a 12 gauge shotgun with 00 buck though. Each pellet from a 12 gauge is equivalent to an AK at 100 yards. The spread of a shotgun is a lot less than what most people realize. The Box-O-Truth shows a 2 1/2″ spread from 12 feet.

Firing a gun inside can and will cause hearing loss. The following are some noise ratings of firearms:

    12 Gauge

-28″ barrel………….151.50dB
-26″ barrel………….156.10dB
-18″ barrel………….161.50dB

    .223, 55GR. Commercial load

-18″ barrel…..155.5dB

9mm……………159.8 dB
.38 S&W………..153.5 dB
.357 Magnum…….164.3 dB
.45 ACP…………..157.0 dB
.45 COLT…………154.7 dB

Ironically a 9mm handgun is much louder than a shotgun with a typical 26″ skeet barrel. Also, most people don’t know that shotguns can be suppressed.

Magazine Capacity & Adaptability

A Sig .357 can often be converted to a .40 S&W with a simple barrel change. No magazine change is required. A Glock 33 can shoot .40 S&W and .357 Sig and 9mm with barrel and magazine changes. For reliability an extractor change is often necessary to convert a .40 to a 9mm but the cost is often justified due to ammo costs. The difference in price in ammo can be notable, especially since the military uses so much 9 mm you can get it as surplus.

Nothing can beat the reliability of a revolver. Smith & Wesson 442 “Airweight” is an ideal self defense handgun because it is small, reliable, and the hammer is highly unlikely to get caught on something.

Magazine springs wear out from compression and decompression. It’s the changing of states that causes wear and tear on the springs. That being said you should load a magazine and let it rest for 5 years. Make sure you test it every once in a while.

A 9mm is often described as a slap while the .45 ACP is described as a push. Practice with both and figure out which one is easier for you to handle.

Getting started
Practice shooting with a .22. Besides a .22 in the hands of a marksman is far more potent than a big-bore rifle in the hands of a novice. Read the 4 rules on safety.

Dogs & Laws

Dog ownership entails daily feeding and walking, intermittent medical care, etc. They are a great alarm but are by no means cheaper or less maintenance than a shotgun. Some States require that to use deadly force you have to announce that you are armed and lock yourself in a room, and the intruder has to be trying to get to you for self defense to be considered. That is an extreme, but it does still exist. Legal fees can be expensive….

“there’s lies, damn lies, and statistics”

June 1, 2007

“..for example, 81 percent of the general public versus 71 percent of gun owners favor the registration of all handguns. The Brady Law is favored by 87 percent of the general population and 82 percent of gun owners.

82% of gun owners support the brady law? I shoot trap/skeet at the gun club at least once a week and I’ve never met a single one of these.

Gun Accidents: And how to avoid them

January 14, 2007

As the saying goes…”those that don’t know history are condemned to repeat it”. So lets learn from the mistakes of others. It seems if all the following accidents seem to be avoidable if you either use a quality holster or follow the four rules.

The four rules of firearm safety are:
1. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded.
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Be sure of your target. (and what is behind it)

Accidents due to No Holster

No Holster #1, Mexican Carry #11,2: Loss of Family Jewels

The man had just stuck the gun back into his waistband when it fired, shooting him in the left testicle. He cringed, causing the gun to fire again and strike him in the left calf.

No Holster #2, Mexican Carry #2: No Wang Vo

His name was Chang Thong Vo, but he was better known on the streets of Chinatown as Tommy or “No Wang Vo” because four years ago he accidentally shot off part of his penis with the .45-calibre handgun he kept stuffed down the front of his baggy blue jeans.

No Holster #3, Gun in Backpack: Woman Paralyzed

Rubalcava’s gun discharged on Aug. 4 as he set the backpack on the floor during a class at California Beauty College in downtown Modesto. The bullet lodged in Michelle’s back and severed her spinal chord, paralyzing her from the waist down.

(probable) No Holster #4, Locked and Loaded Gun Under Pillow

ALBANY, Ga. – A police officer was shot in the wrist when the service weapon that she kept under her pillow went off. Albany police Sgt. Kinshishi Adams, 34, was lying in bed Sunday when a .40 caliber pistol she kept under her pillow discharged and struck her in her left wrist, Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek said. Adams was listed in good condition Tuesday at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Valerie Benton said. “She sustained an extremely serious wound to the left wrist and underwent surgery (Sunday) night,” Cheek said. “Everything indicates it was just a freak accident. She apparently sleeps with a weapon under her pillow, and somehow it discharged.1

Comment from THR says it all: “She sounds like a real bright one. “Let me see, I’m going to cock and lock this pistol then rest my head on it!” Someone that stupid doesn’t need to be in law enforcement and is very lucky she was only shot in the wrist.” Try a holster or a night stand next time. If you awake at night and have to make a speed draw on a criminal standing over your bed, well, it’s too late for you my friend. The best option is to sleep in a secure house, locked bedroom, with your home defense weapon in condition 3. That way you have to make deliberate moves to make your weapon “dangerous”, while using physical barriers and a decent alarm system to give you time to prepare/contact help. Speed drawing is for street carry. Buy a dog if you are that scared.

Cheap Holster #1: Gun Falls Out

While eating dinner at the Planet Hollywood restaurant, a patron bent to pick something up from the floor. A small pistol fell from his pocket, hit the floor, and went off. The bullet struck and injured two convention delegates waiting to be seated; both women went to the hospital.

Cheap Holster #21: Gun gets cocked.

I once was a rent a cop and we had cheap Hunter holsters, the retention strap went over the trigger guard, leaving the hammer exposed. Twice I looked down to see my revolver cocked.

    Violating the four rules

1. Treat all guns as if they are always loaded.

Teen Assumes Gun Was Unloaded

Samuel B. Allgyer, 15, of Mill Hall, and two other male teens, 13 and 15, returned from hunting and each was handling the gun in a farmhouse Thursday afternoon, authorities said. The 15-year-old fired the rifle thinking it had no ammunition in it, said state police Trooper Nicholas A. Loffredo. But it did have a live round, which struck the victim in the chest.

Man Assumes Gun Was Unloaded At Gunshow

John Bogesdorfer, 64, of Monroeville was looking at a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun at the booth of Hannah’s Gun Shop of Tipton, Blair County when the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. The booth was tended by vendor John Hannah . While Bogesdorfer was handling the gun, it went off, striking Gladkoski who was at another vendor’s booth. All guns at the gun show were supposed to be unloaded.

Pop Star is Reckless, Doesn’t Check The Chamber

JIMMY ZAMBO, a Hungarian pop star, died yesterday in a gun accident. Zambo, 42, accidentally shot himself in the head at 5am in his house in Budapest. He had fired a 9mm Beretta out of the window. Zambo removed the clip, but failed to realise a bullet was still in the chamber.

2. Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy.
Being Careless While Unloading1: Darwin Award

Atlantic Beach Police say a gun accident turned fatal Sunday afternoon. Police say two best friends, 26 year old Justin Corbett Ellingsworth and 25 year old Donald Robert Jones Jr, were unloading some guns, …

Extremely rare (not to mention suspicious). Violated rule #2 even though no human was touching the gun.

The man had gotten out of the boat to pick up decoys at the end of the day, said Cape Taylor, Tennessee Wildlife Resources law enforcement supervisor for Davidson and several other counties. A hunting companion, who didn’t have waders on, remained in the boat, where the other man’s shotgun lay on the floor. “The dog apparently jumped back there and hit the trigger of the gun,”

4. Be sure of your target. (and what is behind it)

Shooting before identifyingsource

An off-duty police officer in Connecticut shot and critically wounded his 18-year-old daughter, apparently mistaking her for an intruder after she sneaked out of their home and re-entered through the basement.

Eric Scott, 41, a member of the New Haven police force for nine years, has not been charged in the Tuesday shooting.

“Mr. Scott was under the impression his daughter had gone to bed for the night,” Stratford Capt. Thomas Rodia said. “He did not expect his daughter to be outside or down in the basement.”

Investigators said Tasha Scott left her home late Monday to meet a boyfriend. She triggered a backyard motion sensor light as she tried to enter through a basement door.

Awakened by the light, Eric Scott spotted someone moving in the basement bathroom, police said. He fired his department-issued pistol once, hitting the teen in the knee. The bullet traveled up her leg and lodged in her thigh area, police said.

The teenager underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition Wednesday morning.

Lesson learned: Be sure of your target (rule #4), it just ain’t empty platitude. Invest in a good flashlight. Gun mounted light = target ID while keeping your shooting platform. Don’t shoot anything just because it “broke” into your home. Cops are not infallible. And if somebody is in the bathroom common sense would say they probably aren’t extremely dangerous.

Dropping a Gun

Not sure what to say about this….

Kuala Lumpur- Three shoppers, including two Vietnamese workers, were shot in the leg by stray [pellets] when a Malaysian security guard at a popular mall accidentally dropped his shotgun, reports said Friday. The guard, 24, had been loading his shotgun early Thursday when the weapon slipped and fell to the ground.
